The last swimmers have come in from the beach now and are dressing up-stairs; the cars from New York are parked five deep in the drive, and already the halls and salons and verandas are gaudy with primary colors, and hair shorn in strange new ways, and shawls beyond the dreams of Castile.   Obscene graffiti, poison pen letters and a disgusting effigy greeted Harriet Vane on her return to Oxford to attend celebrations at her old all-female Shrewsbury.

Gaudy Night is mainly a novel of Oxford, despite its being ostensibly a mystery. Harriet Vane is the main character of this novel, though of course Sayers' best creation, Lord Peter Wimsey, plays an important part in this book.5/5(5). Gaudy Night is the twelfth novel in Dorothy Sayers’ Lord Peter Wimsey mystery series. It is also the third book to feature Harriet Vane. The third Dorothy L. Sayers classic to feature mystery writer Harriet Vane, Gaudy Night features an introduction by Elizabeth George, herself a crime fiction master. Gaudy Night takes Harriet and her paramour, Lord Peter, to Oxford University, Harriet’s alma mater, for a reunion, only to find themselves the targets of a nightmare of harassment and mysterious, murderous threats/5().

I actually liked aspects of this book more than the three-star rating would suggest. It all takes place within about 36 hours at a "Gaudy" at Oxford, when the "old boys" return for a reunion, taking up residence, when possible, in the rooms they stayed in as students, and seeing each other (in many cases) for the first time in decades,/5.

Gaudy Night is the 12th book in the Lord Peter Wimsey Mysteries, but you may enjoy the series by reading the books in any order.

This ebook features an illustrated biography of Dorothy L. Sayers including rare images from the Marion E. Wade Center at Wheaton College/5(). Gaudy Night is easily my favorite of Dorothy L. Sayers's beloved series of Lord Peter Wimsey mysteries. It's one of the last in the series and thus hard to talk about without spoiling earlier books, as it deals with the resolution of the relationship between Lord Peter and Harriet Vane, the mystery writer first introduced in Strong Poison and seen again in Have His Carcase/5(K).
